The tantum cutting material brazed onto the steel support is a sintered material of the finest structure. It has good elasticity and an above-average cutting edge life. The cutting edge sharpness to be achieved is equal to that of HSS steels. However, the cutting edge life is considerably longer than with HSS.
These steels are equipped with the edge radius 0.6 mm as standard. The edge radius 0.6 mm is considered standard and is suitable for all profiles.
The edge radii 1.2 mm and 3.0 mm are suitable for long drawn profiles and round bars. The larger radius makes the cutting edge look almost like a tube.
A special machine with profile grinding wheel is required for sharpening these steels. These grinding wheels are coated with diamond-like material (CBN or Borazon). These steels must also be honed with a diamond file after grinding. Tantum steels are well suited for machining softwoods as well as hardwoods.
