Application of the drawknife
A drawknife, as the name implies, is drawn rather than pushed. Pulling allows better control over the forces exerted and minimizes the risk of injury. The principle of operation is similar to that of a plane. By dragging the sharp edge across the surface of the wood, the fibers are peeled from the wood. The knife is mainly used for debarking and polishing of branches or logs. It can be used to finely finish the surface of beams and logs. Drawknifes are also used for creative activities such as carving sculptures or shaping bows. They are universal and allow precise cuts in different types of wood. When using them, be sure to use the correct angle. Depending on the hardness and knottiness of the wood, the cutting angle should be 25° or slightly less.
Sharpening the cutting edge
Sharpening a drawknife can be a bit more difficult than sharpening a plane iron or chisel. It is advisable to place the sharpening stone elevated and secure so that the handles can move freely during sharpening. To obtain a sharp edge on larger draw knifes, we recommend a water stone with a grit of 1000 to 1200. For smaller draw knifes that require a very good edge, a second bevel should be ground with a water stone with a grit of 4000 or 6000.
