Chucks are used with various tools and machines and are called different names according to the area of application. Lathe chucks used in woodworking on lathes are called lathe chucks.

In general, a distinction can be made between lathe chucks and drill chucks. If the chuck holds the workpiece, then it is also called a lathe chuck. Chucks for attaching drills or similar tools are called drill chucks.
The lathe chuck is mainly used on lathes. They can be divided into different categories, such as the three-jaw or four-jaw chuck. The three-jaw chucks are mainly used for round, three- or six-edged workpieces. The four-jaw chuck, on the other hand, is used for four- and eight-edged workpieces. Four-jaw lathe chucks usually have base jaws onto which differently shaped top jaws are screwed.
You will already have come across a drill chuck on other machines such as drills or milling machines. Quick-action chucks, gear rim drill chucks or precise collet chucks are often used.
The quality of the chuck is particularly important to ensure safe and stable working. It is not only worth comparing products, but also choosing a high-quality brand.

Other types
In addition to the lathe chuck and drill chuck, there are other types of chuck that are suitable according to their intended use. These include the following:
- Face plates for screwing on larger pieces of wood for bowls or plates.
- Screw chucks for screwing on smaller and medium-sized wooden blanks
- Drivers and centre punches for fastening wooden scantlings or round timber
- Mandrels, also called clamping mandrels, for holding sleeves or drilled-through workpieces
- Vacuum chucks
