Carving tools

Carving tools come in a variety of shapes. The shape of the cutting edge is called a stitch. Stitch 1 has a straight cutting pattern. Stitches 2 through 11 produce a curved cut pattern. Carving irons labeled 12 through 16 produce an angular cut and are also referred to as a goad foot. Higher numbers are used for special shapes. The cutting pattern of carving tools is usually shown as a line. The second number in the designation for carving tools represents the width of the tool. Most manufacturers of sculpting tools use this designation.

For honing, we recommend small hard Arkansas honing stones in the appropriate shapes such as this set or this set or the less expensive artificial stones.

The honing stones can be used with water or oil. You can find suitable oils here.

For polishing you can use leather belts.

Furthermore, polishing and honing can be done with felt or leather wheels using honing pastes.

For grinding (when honing is no longer sufficient) we recommend slow-running wet sharpening machines.
There is a wide range of accessories for this, also for carving tools and also leather honing wheels.
