The Axminster pen blank drilling jaws have a depth of 42 mm and can accommodate round or square blanks from 16 mm. The inner profile ensures a secure hold, even if the pen blank is not quite square. When you insert the clamping jaws into your chuck and mount them on your lathe, the blank and drill are centred on the same axis. You also have control over the speed and feed of the drill. Advance the drill evenly and retract it frequently to remove the chips. Once the jaws are mounted on the chuck, you can drill batches of blanks to speed up pen production.
As the Essential SK88 chuck and jaws are made from EN1A steel and not stainless steel like our premium Clubman and Evolution chucks, we recommend spraying it lightly with a dry lubricant on a regular basis to prevent tarnishing. You should do this more often if you are working in a damp workshop or turning wet wood.
