It sounds wrong to prepare the workpiece with abrasives to make the surface as smooth as possible, and then work it with a wire brush. For liming (either with lime wax or gilding creams) it is just right.
The specially corrugated metal strands of this brush are designed to deepen the soft growth rings of woods such as ash and oak , leaving more of de liming paste in the grain, creating a stronger contrast. The late wood rings are much harder and the wire brush has little or no effect here, so it won't scratch the wood and ruin all your efforts to get a smooth finish.
If possible, use the liming brush in the same direction as the grain, and then clean the wood.
Using the liming brush is also recommended for special effects with metal effect waxes and the like.
The liming brush is extremely robust and durable.
