These Banksia nuts are the cones of the Banksia species Banksia grandis (origin: Australia / Tasmania). The cones consist of a solid, fibrous, homogeneous, woody mass and are very easy to turn. Light penetrates through the openings in the seed heads after the hollowing process. This creates bizarre objects such as candlesticks or the like.
The natural product Banksia can have very different appearances in terms of colour, size, shape and number of seed openings.
