Compared to industrially manufactured mass products, it should be noted that dimensions and shape show slight fluctuations, which are due to the manufacturing technology of the artisanal forging. In addition, the shape and sharpness of the cutting edge are not yet ready for use with new tools. All tools must first be sharpened. This enables the shape of the cutting edge to be corrected according to individual requirements (influencing factors such as type of wood, workpiece shape and the like).
Application: The roughing tube, also called the shot tube in some areas, is used to turn angular or non-circular workpieces. It is mainly used for long wood turning. The widths listed here are suitable for normal to larger workpieces. A wide spindle tube can also be used for round roughing for smaller workpieces.
Bevel: In contrast to other tubes, the cutting edge is relatively straight. As with all other turning tools, the bevel angle can be designed very differently and depends on the hardness and density of the wood and the shape of the workpiece. In general it can be said that smaller wedge angles (20 - 30º) should be used for softwood and larger wedge angles (30 - 50º) for harder woods.
How it works : The roughing gouge is guided along the rotating squared timber almost at right angles to the axis of rotation on the hand support rail. The hollow side of the tube is tilted slightly in the respective tool feed direction. The tool is held on the handle with one hand and guided on the steel with the other hand. The guiding movement is performed with the ball of the hand on the tool support rail. The tool should not be gripped with the whole hand. This hinders the mobility of the tool. The height of the cutting edge contact point is always above the axis of rotation. A width of 30mm is recommended for basic equipment.
